More Weeding
and another Rockery
At the far
end of the garden from the rockery I cleared yesterday, is a second rockery. Because
of the way it is positioned, we call this area the ‘sunken garden’, because it
looks like it is below ground level inside.
Like the
other rockery, it has been allowed to get a bit overgrown, but because it has a
lot of pine needles on it, the weeds thankfully do not grow as prolifically. I think
the pine trees were originally intended to be dwarf sized, but they have grown
to enormous proportions – about 30 feet tall! They make for a secluded area
behind them though, which can be lovely in the summer.
There is a
ceanothus (Californian Lilac) growing in one part of the sunken garden, which
is in full sun. at this time of year, it is positively humming with bees, which
seem to love it, along with the phlox growing nearby.
The entrance
to the sunken part is along a path (also overgrown) next to a low stone wall. At
the back of the sunken area, is a raised platform which currently houses a
playhouse (many years old and now sadly rotting away) and an area of soil that
we have never really done anything with, except grow weeds!
So today we
set about clearing the weeds from the rockery, the path and the area of soil
next to the playhouse. I had hoped to clear the bed on top of the stone wall
too, but time got the better of me.
Of course,
clearing weeds leads to the inevitable pile of pulled weeds, or, in this case,
three piles of weeds!
But it is
worth it in the end. The path was cleared and brushed and the lawn re-edged
along the side of the lawn.
And the
weeds are noticeably fewer next to the playhouse too J
